In medical treatment, barium sulfate is mainly used as gastrointestinal contrast agent because it can absorb X-ray in gastrointestinal tract. Barium sulfate is insoluble in water and lipid, so it will not be absorbed by gastrointestinal mucosa, and is basically non-toxic to human.
